The second Bienal inaugurated the yearlong quadricentennial celebration of the founding of the city of São Paulo, and constituted a veritable temporary museum of modern art, with more than three thousand artworks from thirty-three countries mounted in two newly constructed buildings designed by Oscar Niemeyer.
